RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
