Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
